This is my command: Love each other.

OUR CLERGY

The Rev. Pedro Cuevas

The Rev. Pedro Cuevas was born in the Dominican Republic, the youngest of six brothers. Before accepting the call to ordained ministry, he had worked as a lawyer, specializing in human rights, and criminal litigation. He also holds a master's degree in Cultural Project management sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He was part of various non-profit and interfaith groups, working on fundamental rights and social justice issues and supporting grassroots communities and culture, for years as part of the legal staff of the Dominican Center for Legal Advice and Investigations (CEDAIL), an organ of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Dominican Episcopal Conference (CED) of the Roman Catholic Church in his hometown.

Pedro studied human rights in Santo Domingo, the Inter-American Human Rights System in San José, Costa Rica, and international human rights education at John Abbott College, Montreal, Canada. In 2007, he attended a human rights clinic at Columbia University in New York. For years he accompanied and documented migration, forced deportation processes, and cases in close collaboration with institutions such as GARR, Solidaridad Fronteriza, Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados y Migrantes (SJRM), Centro Bonó, Flacso-RD, CEJIL, among others.

In 2014, while living in Mexico with his family, he completed his theological studies and was ordained an Episcopal priest at the Cathedral of San Pedro Apóstol, in Guadalajara. He also holds a Master’s degree in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. Also pursued specialized preaching courses in the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC., and biblical preaching from evangelical institutions on education. As a seminarian, he did his field education at St. James’ Episcopal Church of Mount Vernon, Va., where he led Bible studies, preached frequently, and attended vestry and finance committee meetings.

Rev. Cuevas was a member of the Episcopal Network for Economic Justice, the board of the Literacy Volunteer of Santa Fe, and an interfaith group in Santa Fe, N.M. He has also served churches in Baja California (Mexico), New Mexico, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. He supported sustained growth of the Hispanic community, permanently valuing and fostering multicultural relationships in those communities which he served.

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, he strengthened the capacity of an outreach program, helping create a weekly food sub-program to serve different communities in northern Virginia, and providing food to individuals in churches and communities near the Washington metro area. Moved by his human sensitivity, he quickly raised funds for the newly unemployed, making it possible for many Hispanic families to pay their rent arrears.

He describes himself as a pastor committed to serving people, proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, and being a living example of love and humility that brings him closer to Christ, without exception. As part of his ministry, Rev. Cuevas is committed to hearing people’s discipleship stories and walking them through their baptism toward a spiritual journey with God.

He initially heard the voice of God at the ordained ministry from the altar of the Roman Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy in his youth. However, his personal encounter with Christ came in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, when he received his first Bible as a gift after bringing friends and visitors to special evening programs or when he demonstrated that he could memorize Bible verses on the topics shared those nights. From that moment on, Pedro accepted the Lord as his personal savior.

Pedro has a great passion for liturgy and preaching as the only means to communicate fully and effectively the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, love, reconciliation, forgiveness, and the kingdom of God.  In his free time, he reads widely on topics of sociology, history, psychology, spirituality, theology, and homiletics. He enjoys the city, shopping, traveling, and visiting restaurants with his family.
